FAST FOR UNCONDITIONAL PEACE

I, Dr. Charles L. Hyder*, start a fast for Unconditional Peace on 23 September l986 to confront the citizens of the U.S. with the realities of a worldwide nuclear holocaust. Because

THERE IS NO CURE FOR A NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST,

the reality of that holocaust's misery and deaths must be brought home to the U.S. population before the fact.

Decades of effort by individuals and by groups have made U.S. citizens aware of the seemingly inevitable nuclear holocaust, yet the USA, USSR and others continue to add to already exessively bulging overkill arsenals of nuclear warheads. The world's population is the disenfranchised victim of this intimidating nuclear buildup, and I will not stand by and let this insane threat become a horrible reality.

Thus, I put my life on the line in order to stop this nuclear madness. I will end my fast when the U.S. government makes binding commitments**:

(a) to dismantle and disable all nuclear warheads safely by the year 2000 and not replace them,

(b) not to use or support violent offensive military operations against other nations as an option in international relations, and

(c) to pursue an aggressive good faith effort to get the USSR and the rest of the nations of the world to join the USA in these commitments.

** These "binding commitments" could take the form of proposals for Amendments to the US Constitution by the US Congress.

If these or similar conditions are not agreed upon in a timely fashion, the apparently inevitable worldwide nuclear holocaust will become a reality.
