WEBSITE INFORMATION

http://www.prop1.org/prop1/nan.htm

In April, 1995, at the U.N. Non-Proliferation Treaty discussions in New York, an Abolition 2000 Caucus was formed with the shared purpose of abolishing all nuclear weapons by the year 2000. We are encouraged by the unity of diverse groups forming this network.

A January '96 San Francisco meeting proposed the establishment of a web site; the minutes of the February Philadelphia meeting announced the Nuclear Abolition Summit web site: http://www.prop1.org/prop1/nan.htm.

The purpose of this site is to further the goals of the Abolition 2000 Network by creating a medium in which strategies and tactics for eliminating nuclear weapons -- as quickly as humanly possible -- may be formulated.

Since it was introduced, the web site has expanded considerably. This update is intended to define the purpose of this site, and begin exploring methods by which we (including the author, a cyber-novice) can all learn to use it.

The following User's Manual is offered to help realize this purpose.

NUCLEAR ABOLITION SUMMIT WEBSITE USERS' MANUAL

Efficient utilization of this website depends upon an understanding of it's structure, and functions. The site is divided into three major sections:

(1) BREAKING THE NUCLEAR CHAIN (information and communication on next planned meeting),

(2) ABOLITION 2000 (historical progression of Abolition 2000 agreements for triangulation on reality),

(3) COMMUNICATION/INFORMATION CENTER (information and communication for strategic and tactical actions to eliminate nuclear weapons).

I. BREAKING THE NUCLEAR CHAIN

This section is your basic Current Events section, dealing with preparations for scheduled Abolition 2000 projects.

II. ABOLITION 2000

The Abolition 2000 section is a compilation of all documents generated by the Abolition 2000 Network participants. The evolution of present activities may be traced through these documents.

III. COMMUNICATION/INFORMATION CENTER

The Communication/Information Center is an experiment in democracy. It begins from the premise: all participants agree nuclear weapons are a "problem" to be resolved quickly. The instant objective is to structure a mechanism to facilitate the actual elimination of nuclear weapons by the next millennium, sooner if possible.

This situation may provide an opportunity to experience the enjoyment of working together to devise an important solution.

Presently the mechanism is comprised of a FORUM and a RESOURCE LIBRARY.

NOTE: The present configuration is formative. The ultimate success or failure of the mechanism will be determined by the ideas of its participants, thus participation is crucial.

DIALOGUE BOXES are the channel for input, and are conveniently located throughout the site. To participate one need only submit ideas by (1) composing them in a wordprocessing program, (2) using the copy function, (3) click on the FORUM DIALOGUE BOX, (4) place cursor in the message area, (5) paste, and (6) send. This method can be used either to communicate with individuals or groups with e-mail access, or to communicate to the entire Abolition 2000 Network.

A. FORUM

On the theory that freedom, equality and justice, if not just common sense and respect, require that everyone's ideas should be considered equally, the FORUM is open to everyone.

All submissions to the FORUM will be forwarded to all Abolition 2000 participants with known e-mail addresses.

NOTE: Again, this forum is in a formative development stage. Patience, cooperation and suggestions from participants regarding the perfection of mail routing systems, information acquisition and dissemination, or anything else is encouraged.

A-1. ARCHIVE

To provide a link between the individual console operator, denizens of the dialogue box, and actual reality, the ARCHIVE will record every thought expressed in the forum, with the intention of accurately chronicling the reasons behind, and logical progression of, the Abolition 2000 project.

B. RESOURCE LIBRARY

Whereas an informed electorate is prerequisite to democracy, the Resource Library is intended to inform the Abolition 2000 body politic. At this writing the organization of the INFORMATION sector is in the earliest stages of construction. Ultimately the Resource Library would contain all the valid information in the known universe. Immediately it will focus on information related to the project at hand.

This informational focus will begin with (1) a listing of PROJECTS promoting the elimination of nuclear weapons, (2) a network of CONTACTS, groups and/or individuals involved with the listed projects, and (3) INFORMATION, relevant to disarmament, legal, tactical, conversion, and any issues relevant to the elimination of nuclear disarmament.

B-1. ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS

A considerable number of ABOLITION 2000 PROJECTS have been proposed. In an effort to get everyone on the same sheet of music, all available information on each project is posted in this section.

An Abolition 2000 CALENDAR will be linked to the PROJECTS section.

ADDITIONS CAN BE MADE TO THIS SECTION, by pasting them in a dialogue box and clicking the send button.

Just to be well informed, it should be noted that other projects with the aim of eliminating nuclear weapons as quickly as possible, simultaneously being undertaken by other groups and individuals, are listed in a separate section.

B-2. CONTACTS

B-2-a. LISTS

Ideally, all communications will be conducted in an economically, environmentally friendly manner. Until then this location will also continue to make available:

ABOLITION 2000 RESOURCE ORGANIZATIONS
ABOLITION 2000 ADDRESS LIST
ABOLITION 2000 e-mail LIST
NUCLEAR RADIATION HAZARD RESOURCE ORGANIZATIONS
STATE RADIATION HAZARD RESOURCES
NUCLEAR RADIATION HAZARD E-MAIL RESOURCES

B-2-b. INFORMATIONAL RESOURCE

As the C.I.A. so eloquently reminds us, information is power.

This Information Center can serve as a repository of knowledge and resources deemed most essential to Abolition 2000 members.

Often activists are heard to lament the ill-informed state of the masses. This Information Center is intended to begin remedying that lamentable state.

At the moment there's lamentably little information here, and most of that is in the form of links pointing to other web sites. Thanks to modern technology, however, information can now be rapidly transmitted, stored and disseminated in digital form. Immediately, the only thing necessary is for members to submit the information.

B-2-c. LINKS

To supplement the information available through the Resource Library, a list of links to independently existing web sites (government, NGO, industrial and individual) relating to nuclear issues is available under this section.

Because working harmoniously requires linking with like-minded individuals, we are building links to all anti-nuclear web sites.

CLOSING PLEA

The internet offers an amazing opportunity to greater communication, we hope you will find this a useful organizational mechanism, but that may only happen if you help make it happen. PLEASE SEND ALL SUGGESTIONS, CORRECTIONS, and CRITICISM to further letter perfect understanding.

In service to peace through understanding, present site node.
