Forest Service Reinvention Announcement 4/4/94

TO: All Forest Activists
FROM: Steve Holmer

DATE: April 4, 1994
SUBJECT: Forest Service Reinvention Town Hall Meetings

The Forest Service has announced a series of town hall meetings around the nation to help them reinvent the agency. Forest activists can use this opportunity to express ideas for a new and improved Forest ervice, as well as voice our experiences to bolster the argument for change. A large turnout at each of these of public meetings will send a clear message that there is strong public support for national forest reform.

The first meeting will be held in Sacramento, Wednesday, April 6 at the Radisson Hotel, 500 Leisure Lane, from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. Associate Chief David Unger will present a brief summary of Reinvention activities to date and receive comments from the audience.

The second meeting will be in Seattle, Wednesday, April 13 at Shorecrest High School, 15343 25th Ave., NE, from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. This meeting will be hosted by Jim Lyons, Assistant Secretary for Environment, who will be in town to present the Northwest Forest Plan to Judge William Dwyer.

Other town hall meetings scheduled at this time are:

Asheville, North Carolina April 13
Boise, Idaho April 23
Phoenix, Arizona April 26
Minneapolis, Minnesota April 30
Burlington, Vermont

A final meeting will be held in Washington, D.C. May 11, to provide national interest groups an opportunity to meet with Chief Thomas. The format for this meeting has not yet been decided.

Written comments will be accepted by the Reinvention Team until May 7. Send your comments to Forest Service Reinvention Team, PO BOX 96090, Washington, D.C. 20090-6090 or Fax 703/522- 6724.

After analyzing the written and town hall comments, the Reinvention Team will draft a set of options to be presented to Assistant Secretary Lyons and Chief Thomas in early June. Further public comments will be solicited on elements of the draft accepted by the Administration before final recommendations will be released in the early fall.

For more information about the town hall meeting in your region, please contact Hank Montrey, Reinvention Team Leader, at 703/522-8437.
