Here is a list of activities taking place today in the Washington area to commemorate and celebrate the holiday:

Today

Veterans Tribute in Falls Church. Veterans of World War II, men and women, lead a flag ceremony and pay tribute to U.S. soldiers and sailors who died in battle. Begins at 7:30 a.m., Veterans Common, Little Falls Road and North Four Mile Run Drive, Falls Church. Free. For more information, call 703-533-7823.

Falls Church Memorial Day Events. Don Beyer Volvo 3K Fun Run at 9 a.m. Veterans ceremony at 11 a.m. Parade down Park Avenue at 2 p.m. Also, amusement rides, arts and crafts, food sales, pony rides, games, business booths, entertainment and more, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., City Hall grounds, 300 Park Ave., Falls Church. Annapolis Memorial Day Parade, with bands, drill teams, veterans groups, floats, antique cars and other displays. Starts at 10 a.m., Amos Garrett Boulevard and West Street, and proceeds down West Street to the City Dock.

Civil War Memorial Day Program in Baltimore. Prayers, orations and military salutes by local Civil War commemorative units. Period music by tenor soloist Doug Jimerson, the Maryland Heritage Vocal Ensemble and Gilmore's Light Ensemble. Program hosted by the James A. Garfield Camp No. 1, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Auxiliary. Begins at 10:30 a.m., Loudon Park National Cemetery, 3445 Frederick Rd., Baltimore. Free. Navy Memorial Events in Washington. The Fleet Reserve Association will lay a wreath at the Navy Memorial, 701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW., at 10 a.m., and the Navy will lay a wreath there at 1 p.m. The U.S. Navy Band and its Sea Chanters chorus will perform works by John Williams, Henry Mancini, George Gershwin and others beginning at 8 p.m. at the Navy Memorial. Memorial Day Celebration in Bethesda, with retired Brig. Gen. Erle Cocke. Wreath-laying and tributes by community groups. Sponsored by the Gen. William Smallwood Chapter of the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. At 10:45 a.m., Veterans Park, Norfolk and Woodmont avenues, Bethesda. Free. 301-897-8753.

Memorial Day Program at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery. The 257th Army Band will perform, and the Marines will provide a firing party and a bugler. The cemetery is at 11301 Crain Hwy., Cheltenham.

Wreath-laying to honor members of the Army 1st Division who died in the world wars and Vietnam War. Begins at 11 a.m., 1st Division Memorial, on the Ellipse, south of the Old Executive Office Building, off Executive Avenue NW and east of 17th Street. Free.

Wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery. President Clinton participates in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier/Amphitheater and speaks at a Memorial Day service at Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial events. Speeches by officials from veterans organizations and the Vietnam Women's Memorial Project at the Wall, live music, a military color guard and wreath-laying ceremonies. Sponsored by the National Park Service. Begins at 1 p.m., Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Constitution Avenue NW between 21st Street and Henry Bacon Drive. Free.

Moment of Remembrance. Taps will be played and there will be a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. observances throughout the country. The Moment of Remembrance will be held in Section 1 at Arlington National Cemetery, where soldiers from the Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf War are buried. The event is being sponsored by No Greater Love, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sponsoring memorial observances for families that have lost loved ones in service to the country or to an act of terrorism.

Choral Concert by the DePauw University Concert Choirs, performing Ives's "Variations on America" and Hanson's "Song of Democracy." Begins at 7:30 p.m., Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 212 East Capitol St. NE. Free. For more information, call 202-543-4200.

Memorial Day Jazz Festival. Sponsored by the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. Jazz ensembles and orchestras will perform from noon to 8 p.m., Jones Point Park, on the waterfront under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Alexandria. Bring a picnic, lawn chairs or blankets. Food available for purchase. No pets, alcohol or grills. Free. For more information, call 703-883-4686.

Rockville Memorial Weekend Celebration continues. Wreath-laying ceremony at the North Washington Street parade reviewing stand at 9:30 a.m. Parade -- with drill teams, floats, clowns and more -- at

10:30 a.m. Free admission and parking.

Federal Government

Federal offices are closed.

Post offices are closed except Hampton Park, Suburban, National Capitol and the main office. No regular mail delivery; express mail only.

Smithsonian museums are open.

Transportation Services

Metrorail and MetroAccess will operate from 8 a.m. to midnight. Metrobus, Ride-On, DASH and the Fairfax Connector will operate on a Sunday schedule. CUE and Connect-A-Ride will operate on a Saturday schedule. MARC, VRE, the Crystal City Trolley, RIBS, "The Bus," PRTC OmniRide, Tysons Shuttle will not be in service. The MTA commuter routes will not be in service.
