The Dhammayietra Peace Walk
April 17, 1997

The Walk Goes On

Followers of Maha Ghosananda came to Lafayette Park in the Spring of 1997 to pray for world peace and to bring a message of the violence and brutality the Bhuddist people have suffered in Cambodia, and to tell of their Peace Walk there recently. They talked with Thomas and left some news articles about the violence being inflicted on the people of Cambodia.

For the first time since their exile in the '80's, saffron clad monks, white robed nuns, and a handgul of international peace activists emerged from the forest at Battambang, and walked over 250 km to the Banteay Chmar Temple north of Malai to ask for an end to oppression for Buddhist people there. At least 1,000 Pailin residents gathered along the road for a personal blessing from Maha Ghosananda. The walkers were warmly welcomed by children, families bringing gifts.

Cambodia

* Slaughter on Sunday March 30, 1997
* In late April, Cambodians and Bhuddist Monks gathered in Lafayette Park with banners and a copy of the Phnom Phen Post to bring attention to the violence there. The Phomn Phen Post reports on violence with several articles about the slaughter of protesters at the Khmer Nation Party demonstration March 30, 1997. Although Cambodia has certainly seen its share of human rights indignities, it appears that this is the worst act of terrrorism since the 1993 elections. A full unit of military officers stood by and did nothing during the attacks. [These are horribly graphic pictures, but we feel the people have the right to know the truth.] Meanwhile, crowds of people gathered at the massacre site to light incense and lay wreaths on the ground.
* U.N. Envoy-Thomas Hammerberg voices his concerns at a press conference over the human rights violations that continue to plague the area. And the violence goes on. . .
* Son Sen, head executioner for the Pol Pot regime, was executed, along with his entire family, in early June. According to Reuters News Agency, Pol Pot, who slaughtered up to 2 millioin people in the 1970's, was responsible, then fled to the jungle. The front page of the Washington Times carried the story about Sen on June 14, 1997.
