The first week in August has become "Hiroshima Week" for many activists. In Washington, D.C., the annual Gray Panther Hiroshima and Nagasaki commemorations began August 5 and 8, 1981. (It's August 6 and 9 in Japan.) Survivors of the 1945 bombings (known as "Hibakusha") come to the U.S. Capitol to tell their horrific stories with the appeal, "Never Again!" There are very few survivors now, people who were lucky enough to be on the outskirts of the cities. Those who were closer to the epicenter died long ago from cancers, leukemia, immune deficiency disorders, hemorrhages, a long list. Only recently did the Japanese government agree to help the Hibakusha. Of course, the US government has offered them nothing, despite its culpability in dropping the atomic bombs on half a million civilians.
