Dear Friends:

The HIROSHIMA/NAGASAKI Peace Committee of the National Capital Area asks for your support in planning the Eighteenth Annual Commemoration of the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Although polls show strong popular support for nuclear disarmament, the nuclear powers continue their arrogant, misguided nuclear programs. Our own government intends to maintain an arsenal of nearly 10,000 nuclear weapons for the foreseeable future. We hypocritically condemn India's and Pakistans's nuclear folly, yet it is the U.S. government that used nuclear weapons against the defenseless people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and has led us to the brink of nuclear catastrophe. According to Dr. Arjun Makhijani, speaking in the July/August issue of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, "The possibility of accidental all-out nuclear war is greater today than during the Cold War." We must press anew our demands to meet human needs, to cleanup contaminated nuclear sites, and to eliminate nuclear weapons.

1998 Hiroshima / Nagasaki Commemoration Program
* "Nuclear Weapons and Humanity", Tuesday, August 4, 6-8PM. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, 9th & G Streets N.W. ( Parking off 10th Street, Gallery Place Metro) The U.S. Premiere of a special Photo Exhibit detailing fifty years of human suffering caused by nuclear weapons. Special Guests include Hibakusha, Marshall Islanders, Atomic Veterans and Downwinders. (The exhibit will be on display the entire month of August.)

* Hiroshima Remembrance, August 5, 6-9PM, Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The program will include a children's program, speakers, cultural performances, and at dusk, a colorful candlelantem float in memory of all nuclear victims. Special guests, Hibakusha (living A-Bomb survivors)

* Nagasaki Remembrance, Saturday, August 8, 7: PM, Metropolitan AME Church 1517 M Street NW. "Nuclear Abolition and Human Survival," with Professor Shingo Shibata from Hiroshima University. Followed by a candlelight procession to the White House.

Not everyone can volunteer, but each one has a part. Without your time, energy and resources we could not organize the annual Remembrance Activities.

Robert J. Lifton admonishes us; "Keeping alive Hiroshima's death may help keep us alive." With your support and participation we will again keep alive the memory of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for the sake of Mother Earth and all her children throughout the world.

Aloha March on Washington, DC

Stand with Hawaiian's and help to right past wrongs. To mark the 100 th year anniversary of the illegal annexation of Hawaii, Hawaiian's and people from all over the world will gatherin Washington, DC on August 7th and 8th.

Share Butch Kekahu's dream. The Aloha March has been fifteen years in the planning. Butch's vision is to educate the US about the facts of the illegal overthrow of Hawaii, reach out and unite Hawaiians and build relationships and solidarity with non-Hawaiians and to bring the gift of Aloha to Washington, DC.

The march starts with an overnight vigil on 8 / 7 followed by a march to the Eclipse on 8 / 8. There will be Hawaiian music, prayers and speakers on the 8 th. The march is open to everyone. Please come and learn the facts and enjoy the Aloha Spirit
