Greetings colleagues: Here is a national media advisory about some of the August peace actions. Please note that the ANA website has (a) up to date materials on DOE, nukes and plutonium bomb cores to hand out or table at your area's upcoming action and (b) a list of events across the country (ask ANA to put your event on the list if it's not there already). From Bath, Maine to Seattle, Washington, activists have scheduled demonstrations, silent vigils, and other events to educate the public about Bush Administration plans to build a new generation of nuclear weapons, such as "bunker busters" and "mini-nukes," along with plants producing additional plutonium, tritium and other radioactive materials for warheads and bombs. The largest demonstrations are planned at nuclear weapons facilities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, near Knoxville, and Livermore, California, 50 miles east of San Francisco. On Sunday, August 10 a rally, march and interfaith service will culminate with hundreds of people joining hands to encircle the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In Tennessee, four days of educational events in Knoxville and Oak Ridge will lead up to a Sunday, August 10 march, rally and direct action at the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons plant. Other gatherings will take place outside the gates of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and at the Nevada Test Site near Las Vegas. Events are also set for major metropolitan centers including New York City, Atlanta, Portland, and Washington, D.C. The Alliance for Nuclear Accountability (ANA), whose members are involved in many of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki commemorative events, is a network of 33 groups representing the concerns of communities downwind and downstream from U.S. nuclear weapons facilities. - - 3 0 - - - a city-by-city listing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki events with local contacts is posted at http://www.ananuclear.org/HiroshimaDays2003.html - a briefing kit on current nuclear weapons issues may be obtained from ANA Public Education Consultant Bob Schaeffer at (239) 395-6773, email: bobschaeffer@earthlink.net Marylia Kelley Executive Director Tri-Valley CAREs (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment) 2582 Old First Street Livermore, CA USA 94551 - is our web site address.
