What is The Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA?

GHRC/USA is an independent nonprofit, nonpartisan, humanitarian organization. Founded in 1982, the Commission supports survivors of human rights abuses in Guatemala and the relatives of victims; investigates human rights cases; documents cases for congressional investigations, Political asylum claims, and media reports; and, educates the public, U.S. Congress, the INS, and other organizations whose policies affect Guatemalans. The goal of the Commission is to reduce the level of state sponsored repression in Guatemala and to mitigate the effects of political violence on those who have survived.

GHRC/USA's daily work involves researching and documenting human rights abuses. The Commission has conducted on-site investigations of specific cases in Guatemala and has one of the most complete archives in the country. GHRC/USA provides information for political asylum cases, scholarly articles and other ends. The primary work of the Commission also includes education. GHRC/USA has organized briefings, sponsored speaking tours for Guatemalan activists, and headed educational delegations to Guatemala. Staff members have given tall;s at universities and gatherings throughout the country. GHRC/USA publishes the biweekly Human Rights UP-DATE, which provides the latest information on the social, political, and human rights situation, and the biannual Guatemala bulletin, which affords a summary of the human rights picture, as well as news and analysis.

Coalition "Missing" is a project of GHRC/USA. The Coalition is a group of 19 U.S. citizens who have survived human rights abuses in Guatemala or are related to people killed in political violence there. Dianna Ortiz is the group's co-chairperson.
