Five demonstrators protesting U.S. sanctions against Iraq were
arrested
yesterday for defacing the sidewalk in front of the White House,
U.S.
Park Police said.
The incident occurred shortly after noon as 14 members of the
Dorothy
Day Catholic Workers began an unscheduled demonstration on the
sidewalk outside the White House. Several members lay on the ground
while others drew chalk outlines around their bodies, police said.
The area was restricted to moving pickets only, and the five
protesters--two women and three men--were arrested for violating
a
restricted zone and defacing government property, police said.
They
were taken to a U.S. Park Police facility in Southeast Washington,
issued citations and released.
