Black Voices For Peace 1400 16th Street, NW - Suite 225 Washington, DC 20009 For Immediate Release: July 30, 2003 Contact: Joia Jefferson Nuri 301-920-0670 inthepubliceye@starpower.net BLACK VOICES FOR PEACE AND ANTI-WAR GROUPS JOIN FORCES TO DEMAND U.S. TROOPS BE BROUGHT HOME NOW--END THE OCCUPATION OF IRAQ STOP BUSH'S LIES--HEAL THE ECONOMY!! FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 2003, north side of Lafayette Park (across from the White House) from 5:30 UNTIL 8:30 PM. Press Conference at 5:30pm sharp! Protest to Open New Phase of U.S. Anti-War Movement Focusing On Getting U.S. Troops Out of Iraq: America's "New Vietnam" BLACK VOICES FOR PEACE is convening a coalition of justice and peace groups and military families to call for the return of U.S. troops, end the occupation of Iraq, a United Nations led reconstruction effort, expose and stop Bush's lies, and to heal the nation's ailing economy growing worse in large measure because of the war. Nearly everyday, our young men and women in uniform are been shot at, killed or seriously wounded by Iraqis resisting the U.S./British led occupation of Iraq. Our young people in Iraq serving in the U.S. military are quickly coming to realize, that they have been lied to by Bush and company. They also are coming to see their presence in Iraq as wrong, immoral and unnecessary, and increasingly speaking out against their presence in Iraq. More and more they are becoming angry and frustrated as they get picked off like sitting ducks in a war for oil and empire. America is frustrated by BUSH'S PACK OF LIES. The peace vigil and protest will begin with a press conference at 5:30 pm across from the White House on the north side of Lafayette Park. Speakers will include a member of BVFP who has a family member in Iraq in the military who is calling for the troops to come home, representatives of Black Voices for Peace, United for Peace and Justice, International ANSWER and other groups. "It's not about 16 words in (the President's) January state of the union speech, it's about the 16 plus lies Bush and company have told the people of world over the past several months justifying the U.S. needed to go to war. Our troops are in Iraq under false pretenses and the Iraqi people are suffering. This is America's new Vietnam" says Damu Smith, founder of Black Voices for Peace.
