Hiroshima Day in Perth, Western Australia 1998 August 6th was marked this year by a joint vigil at the Wesley Church site in central Perth by members of People for Nuclear Disarmament and the Jabiluka Action Group (JAGWA). We arrived at the site at 10:30am and proceeded to set our displays, tables etc in the rain. But fortunately the rain soon stopped, and the few later showers we experienced were tamed by two large umbrellas which the staff of Wesley Mission kindly made available for our use. We placed our tables containing leaflets, petitions and the like under these and kept them dry. We had a several petitions, centering around the abolition of nuclear weapons and uranium mining, and collected hundreds of signatures on these. As usual, Judy Blyth's beautiful banners and sunflower paintings dominated our displays, which also included photographs of the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and photographs of the campaign at Jabiluka. We also handed out about 1000 leaflets promoting nuclear weapons abolition and arguing against uranium mining, during the 4 - 5 hours that we were there. The PND committee thanks Wesley Central Mission and all those who helped organise this event or came along for helping us to make the day a great success. ----------------------------------------------------- Graham Daniell Western Australia gdaniell@wt.com.au
