Commemorations took place yesterday in Hiroshima. In Australia, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be marked by protest rallies that make clear the connection between uranium mining and nuclear weapons proliferation with the slogan 'from Hiroshima to Jabiluka'. Opposition to uranium mining at Jabiluka is to be a major focus of Hiroshima - day rallies nationwide. In the US, Hiroshima Day was marked by a protest at the Lawrence Livermore weapons Lab, and a vigil outside the Lockheed defence plant which produces items for the US Space Command. In the UK, 30 peace walkers are close to completing a 1000Km trek organised by For Mother Earth from NATO headquarters in Brussels to the Faslane submarine base in Scotland. The walkers, from Belgium, Canada, France, Finland, Scotland, The Netherlands, Sweden, the US and India are spreading the disarmament message as they go. 20 walkers from Sri Lanka, Romania, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine have been refused visas. An unprecedented demonstration against nuclear weapons of 3000 people has taken place in Delhi, while in Japan commemorations were made at an official level by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Prime Minister. In Australia, commemorations/protests will take place on Saturday 8 August in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Lismore, and Newcastle. On Sunday there will be events in Melbourne and Brisbane. All these events have as a theme the 'Hiroshima to Jabiluka' slogan, and will be an expression of support for the Jabiluka blockade and the elimination of nuclear weapons and the nuclear industry. The Hiroshima Day Rally in Sydney will commence at Hyde Park North, at 12 noon, proceeding at 12.30/40, via the Tent City at Energy Resources of Australia, where Lee Silva of the Redfern Aboriginal Corporation will speak, and then to First Fleet Park, where it is intended to hold a rally and concert. Speakers will include Ian Cohen of the Greens, David and Ali of the Jabiluka Action Group, and speakers from the Hiroshima Day Committee. Entertainment will be provided by JJJ's Adam Spencer, Cactus Child, Nitocris, Aboriginal dancers, and many others.
