WIPP and Abolition List: We had a good turnout and a great response today for the Colorado Springs portion of the "Mark the WIPP route" series of rallies. Over 30 people hung very large banners off the pedestrian bridge over I-25 in downtown Colorado Springs, then dispersed to various exits on the freeway to raise awareness of the WIPP transports slated to begin later this summer. Two local TV stations and the Monument Tribune (which is giving better coverage of WIPP than the daily Colorado Springs paper) were on hand to report on the event. We were threatened with storms constantly, and the actions caused some freeway backups, but it was very heartening to see an almost universal positive reaction to the protests by folks on the road, particularly truckers. Engineers on two freight trains passing by also blew long whistles and gave us a thumbs-up. So it is obvious that a good portion of the public, including transportation specialists, are opposed to WIPP transports. Loring Wirbel PPJPC/CPIS Colorado Springs lwirbel@igc.apc.org P.S. to Reinhard in Nevada: Do not be too harsh with yourself about your posting on the nuclear transport from Korea. We have all felt that frustrated with local responses from time to time, and we're probably all guilty of telling our cohorts they're not organizing hard enough.
