National Call to Washington DC
on July 25, 1998
* To denounce the Centennial of the US
invasion and colonization of Puerto Rlco
* To reaffirm our right as a nation to a true
process of self-determination
* To demand the release of the Puerto Rican
political prisoners and prisoners of
war
One hundred years after the invasion, our people
have affirmed once and again that our identity is unique in the world, our
culture finitely rooted, our traditions, our music and our languages all
represent our resistance to assimilation. Aware of the significance of this
centennial, we are sure that as a people we will continue to exist and rejoice
in the strength of our national identity and culture.
On the other hand, it is imperative that at this
juncture we demand our inalienable right to self-
determination be respect. During the hundred years
that the US Congress has dominated our political fate, it has never authorized
a plebisite that abides by international law guidelines, where our people may
clearly express their aspirations regarding the status of our island. It is
further of great impotence that the U.S. Congress understood our inalienable
right to self-determination which extends to all Puerto Ricans regardless of
where we reside.
No people can effect their right to self‑determination
freely while their political prisoners are held behind bars. Puerto Rico has fifteen daughters and sons
who are in federal prisons due to their activities in support of Puerto Rico's
independence. Most of these men and
women have served eighteen years, yet not one of them was found guilty of
causing loss of Iife to another human being, It is time to bring them home!
From San Francisco to Orlando, from Boston to
Washington D.C. we should reflect on the historical significance of this date
and make a commitment to this effort by helping to organize and to mobilize to
the activities that will be part of this Jornada Nacional Puerto Rico' 98.
Activities will take place in Guanica, Puerto Rico;
San Francisco; and New York. In Washington D.C. the activities will consist of
an overnight vigil in front of the WHITE HOUSE
July 24-25, a political rally, and a concert by Roy Brown.
