A LITTLE HISTORY

In l9l7, suffragists maintained a 24-hour-a-day peace vigil outside President Wilson's gate at the White House. During the '60's Lafayette Park (across Pennsylvania Avenue) was the site of civil rights and anti-war demonstrations. In l97l a year-long continuous vigil was begun by the Quakers, protesting the Vietnam war. In l976 a World War II veteran seeking Veterans Administration benefits won Court protection for maintaining a continuous, symbolic presence: USA v. Abney, U.S. Court of Appeals.

Concepcion Picciotto began her steadfast vigil in l98l, staying strictly within ever-tightening regulations. "She's a paragon of dedication and self-discipline," say admiring friends.

EDITOR'S NOTE: WHAT TO EXPECT

If the government is true to prior form, newcomers will be subjected to harassment in attempt to discourage their presence. Usually if you keep returning after one or two arrests, the police begin treating you with respect. Stationary signs may be no larger than 4' x 4' x l/4". Someone must be within three feet of signs or any other property at all times or risk confiscation, citation, and/or arrest

Storage of personal property such as clothing, blankets, etc., are discouraged as that is usually interpreted by police as of using the park for "living accommodations," or "camping." No tents, structures, chairs, tables, or any camping paraphernalia allowed.

Look at your tour of peace duty in Peace Park as life on the front lines.

And welcome.
