THE FAST FOR LIFE IN ITS NINTH WEEK:
WE ASK FOR YOUR HELP AND YOUR PRAYERS!

An ecumenical group of religious organizations in Cuba has requested a donation of used computers -- XTs and 286s, practically obsolete by US standards -- to help build an island-wide medical information network. The Cuban churches have made this request because they see their people's health care as a part of their mission. As the late Rev. Clarita Rodes said, "Jesus preached the Word, but He also healed the sick." (Rev. Rodes died in 1994 after the US embargo of Cuba prevented her from obtaining medicines she needed to sustain her transplanted kidney.)

Under the auspices of Pastors for Peace, US and Canadian citizens responded to this call from the Cuban churches. They were met with brutal treatment by US Treasury officers, and the used computers they attempted to take to Cuba were all seized. Five members of Pastors for Peace consecrated a "Fast for Life" on Ash Wednesday, in repentance for our nation's brutal policy toward our Cuban neighbors. One faster was forced to leave the fast after a health crisis left him unable to walk. The others have not taken solid food since February 21. They have resolved to fast until the medical computers are released for Cuba.

Whatever the politics of US/Cuba relations, our government's restriction of the free flow of medical and humanitarian aid violates international law and the precepts of the religious bodies to which we belong.

AS THE FAST FOR LIFE APPROACHES DAY 60, WE ASK FOR YOUR PRAYERS:

FOR THE FASTERS -- Rev. Lucius Walker, Lisa Valanti, Brian Rohatyn, and Jim Clifford -- FOR THE PEOPLE OF CUBA -- AND FOR RECONCILIATION AND PEACE BETWEEN OUR TWO NATIONS.

WE ALSO ASK YOU TO CALL THESE MEMBERS OF THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION, AND URGE THEM TO IMMEDIATELY RELEASE THE MEDICAL COMPUTERS FOR CUBA:
