The U.S. Secret Service again closed a lane of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House yesterday, a move that has angered District officials.

Secret Service spokesman David Adams said the avenue between 15th and 17th street NW was closed because of security concerns. He would not elaborate, nor would he say if the historic stretch of road will be closed today.

The lane closing, which started late Tuesday during a week when President Clinton is out of the country, has angered District officials from Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) to D.C. Council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2). Norton said the city should not be turned into a garrison, and Evans said city officials should have input on the closing of the street.

Ronald K. Noble, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for enforcement, is expected to recommend that a section of Pennsylvania Avenue be closed indefinitely next week when he makes public part of a review of White House security, according to sources.
