PEACE PARK ANTI-NUCLEAR VIGIL P.O. Box 27217 Washington, D.C. 20038 (202) 462-0757 Matthew Hyland 4433 Greenwich Parkway, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20007 November 25, 1990 Dear Matthew: Received your note, and letter to the editor. Actually I wasn't aware that Cong. Ted Weiss has been trying to get legislation passed on Economic Conversion. I don't pay much attention to what goes on on the HIll because, frankly, I don't think much beyond grandiose verbage and the rubberstamping of administrative policy occurs there. At the risk of seeming overly sensitive, I was slightly dismayed that your only comment on Proposition One appeared to be, "More power to you!" I pray that I do not covet power for if I do I am dishonest. If I am honest what I seek is understanding and cooperation, because I believe only those factors will result in peace on earth. Your letter to the editor was very hopeful. For years we have been promoting a philosophy of "Peace through Reason" as an alternative to the present administrative philosophy of "Peace through Strength." You clear recognition of the fact that violence, or the threat of violence is not a viable option for settling disputes indicates that we are on the same wave length. Your awareness that "the banishing of war will not be achieved promptly or easily, but the process should (nonetheless) be set in motion" is further indication that we are thinking in the same channels. You belief in a "rule of law" is another reflection of similarity in thought. Finally your notion that "an initiative to abolish war might gain enough support to get it rolling toward universal acceptance" -- although it certainly was not intended as such -- could be interpreted as a reference to Proposition One. I am taking the liberty of sending you a copy of the official petition to get Proposition One on the D.C. ballot for the 1990 election. We need the signitures of approximately 15,000 registered D.C. voters to succeed. We don't see Proposition One as the solution, but as an initiative to get the ball rolling toward a rule of law premised on the value of human life above political interests. We hope you will help, our survival may depend on it. In service to a loving Creator,
