Don't Forget The Peace Dividend

An Aug. 21 news story reported that President Bush said: "We cannot attack the deficit by attacking the very heart of our armed forces--committed men and women."

Nobody who works for global disarmament has any intention of attacking men and women, whether they are committed or not. Furthermore, I would not be in favor of giving a peace dividend to the banks. The rich are rich enough. We need the peace dividend to be directed at the heart of poverty, both urban and rural. We need the peace dividend for housing, health care, education, agriculture, drug rehabilitation and environmental restoration.

Through planned economic conversion, those "committed men and women" will be fully employed with worth- while jobs. The good thing they could do would be limitless.
