A uniformed Secret Service officer standing in a guard booth outside the White House accidentally shot himself in the hand yesterday, a Secret Service spokesman said.

The officer, whose identity could not immediately be learned, was standing in a booth on the southeast side of the White House when his gun went off about 5:15 p.m. The spokesman said he did not know why the gun discharged, and said the wound was superficial.
