Housing Now!, a national coalition of housing advocates, foundations, labor
unions, religious organizations and other advocates of housing for low- and
moderate-income people, announced plans yesterday for an Oct. 7 march on
Washington.
Mayor Marion Barry, the singer El DeBarge, Del. Walter E. Fauntroy
(D-D.C.), Jesse L. Jackson, various elected officials and several D.C. housing
activists made the announcement at a news conference held at the Trinity Arms
in Northwest Washington, apartments renovated last year for homeless families.
Trinity Arms is viewed as a testament to what can be accomplished when a
partnership is made between government and the private sector.
Said Donna Brazile, national coordinator for Housing Now!, "We want to send
the message that some HUD programs, like this one, work. In the wake of the
current scandal, we're urging the Bush administration not to throw out the
baby with the bath water."
