CONCERN FOR THE PARKLESS

I am writing in response to Jim Naughton's article regarding the homeless: "The Hard Chill of Winter: Washington's Homeless Seeking Cold Comforts in City Streets and Parks" {Dec. 1} .

Yes, we care; we do not want homeless people to be without food and lodging. We do not want Mitch Snyder to die of starvation for the want of equitable treatment of the homeless.

Yet, I cannot but wonder if his efforts could include some concern for those who are becoming parkless. What if the fasting could be alternated with K.P. duty to clean up the areas where the homeless are fed after the meals are served? Take a look at the orderly lines formed at the mobile kitchens. The care and kindness extended toward other unfortunate people is admirable. Does it have to stop there? Could it not be extended to putting the cup and plate that held the very bread and drink of life into a trash container, so that the place of welcome for the homeless would remain as welcome for others?

I seldom pass by an open hand without putting something in it -- I pray for legislation that will provide homes, food, education and job opportunities. Often I have picked up the litter within my reach.

But now I avoid the parks where I used to enjoy the most beautiful city in the world. I find myself feeling very ungenerous toward the down-trodden as my compassion turns to intolerance of their lack of concern for those who give.
