'IT'S OUR FLAG, TOO'

Column: LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Friday, November 4, 1988 ; Page A24

In the Oct. 23 letters page a reader noted that an American flag was burned at a recent Pentagon demonstration against U.S. policy in El Salvador. I can assure you this unfortunate incident was the work of outsiders who were not sanctioned by the organizers of this nonviolent protest.

During the demonstration some of us held a large American flag and a sign stating "Stop Killing in Our Name" at the entrance to the Pentagon. Numerous participants, including Daniel Ellsberg, thanked us for bringing the flag. When Post reporter Steve Bates asked us why we brought the flag, we told him that it's our flag, too, and we are appalled at what is being done with it in our name in Central America. We noticed many Pentagon employees nodding their understanding of our symbolic statement.
