William Thomas 1440 N Street N.W. Apt. 410 Washington, DC 20005 (202) 462-0757 October 8, 1988 Judge Norma Holloway Johnson United States District Court 400 John Marshall Place 20001 Your Honor: For a good number of years I have sincerely believed that a meaningful system of legal principles, administered with objective reason, is the essential keystone of civilization. Unfortunately, in recent years -- as it has seemed ever more apparent that administration of legal principle (at least with regard to"camping" inside this District of the nation) has nearly deserted objective reason in favor of semantic fantasy -- I have come ever closer to despair. However, the objective reasoning which I believe you displayed -- on October 6, 1988 in deciding the matter of USA v. PEACE DEMONSTRATOR, aka David Sanchez, USDC Cr. No. 88-0239 -- has gone some way toward renewing my confidence in the basic decency, and good sence which, I pray, lie within the capacity of every human being. The prophet Isaiah might have suggested that a good judge could only say: let us reason together; though your sins are as scarlet you shall be washed as white as snow. In this case it seems quite likely that you have applied that objective principle well. Thank you very much. In admiration of common sence, I remain your friend, William Thomas
