An estimated 2,000 people gathered on the Mall yesterday at a rally in honor of Habitat for Humanity Day, according to U.S. Park Police.

Habitat is an international, nonprofit Christian organization, based in Americus, Ga., that creates housing for low-income families by rehabilitating structures or building new ones. Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, are active workers in Habitat work camps.

The rally included 500 volunteers on a 12-week, 1,200-mile walk from Portland, Maine, to Atlanta, during which they plan to raise $1.2 million and build 120 houses, according to the group's news release. Habitat volunteers have built more than 3,000 houses in the past 12 years, and are planning a project in Southeast Washington.
