The Community for Creative Non-Violence erected tarpaper shacks and chicken
coops on the lawn of the Capitol yesterday in an effort to persuade Congress
to focus more attention on the nation's shortage of housing for low-income
people.
CCNV's actions are part of a series of national protests designed to focus
attention on homelessness and the need for more affordable housing.
Demonstrations are scheduled to take place today in about 65 cities, including
Washington.
Mitch Snyder, CCNV leader and a coordinator of the national protest effort,
called the structures "representative of the kinds of places a number of
Americans are forced to call home."
Snyder said his group's application for a permit to place the shacks near
the Capitol was denied, but police made no arrests in the protest.
