About 3,000 people walked more than six miles around the Mall yesterday
afternoon in a walkathon to raise money for AIDS care and lobbying efforts,
according to U.S. Park Police.
Organizers said yesterday they had raised about $220,000 in pledges and
donations from the second annual Next Step AIDSWALK. But with additional
pledges expected in coming weeks, organizers said they expect to collect more
than the $265,000 that was raised last year. The walkathon began at the steps
of the Capitol and made a loop around the Mall past the Washington Monument
and Lincoln Memorial.
Money from the 10-kilometer walkathon will benefit, among others, the
Whitman-Walker Clinic, which provides counseling and legal, medical and
financial support to people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and the
Human Rights Campaign Fund, a political action committee that focuses on
AIDS-related issues.
