MORE BUSES FOR THE HOMELESS

The other night, the turquoise bus that had been refitted as a nighttime
shelter for a few of our homeless brothers and sisters was parked next to the
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority building on 5th Street NW. The
bus has been made into a small sleeping shelter through the generosity of a
group of local business leaders to whom we all should be grateful. We also owe
a great deal to Mitch Snyder, whose hunger strike gave the right people a push
in the right direction.
Why not "push" some more people? A refitted bus costs about $8,500. A
business, church or other organization could sponsor a bus.
These buses would be temporary solutions. If the world were perfect, we
would have warm, clean, comfortable homes for every human being.
Unfortunately, we who are warm, clean and comfortable are not perfect. Let's
try this solution now.
