A 37-year-old resident of a recently reopened shelter for the homeless in Northwest Washington was stabbed and seriously injured last night during a fight in a bathroom at the facility, and another resident was arrested in connection with the incident, D.C. police said.

Police said Chauncey O. Johnson was stabbed twice in the chest and once in the left arm with a knife during a fight in a first-floor bathroom at the Federal City Shelter at 425 D St. NW shortly after 10 p.m. Johnson was in serious but stable condition at Howard University Hospital last night, hospital officials said.

Police arrested Johnny Masters, 37, at the scene and charged him with assault with intent to kill.

The shelter is run by the Community for Creative Non-Violence, a homeless advocacy group founded by activist Mitch Snyder, and was just reopened Wednesday after a $6.5 million partial renovation of the building that was funded by the federal government.
