HOLLYWOOD AND THE HOMELESS
Column: LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Monday, February 16, 1987
; Page A22
If Martin Sheen's Hollywood acquaintances and Mitch Snyder's acquaintances
in Congress show up to sleep on the city's heating grates on March 3
{Personalities, Feb. 11} , where will the homeless people sleep? Will the
participating members of Congress open their homes for the night? Will those
who come from California put up the homeless in local hotels? I am thankful
that Mr. Sheen and Mr. Snyder are working to help the homeless. But instead of
traveling here, maybe the Hollywood people should simply send to Mr. Snyder's
shelter the money they would spend on their trip and spend their time
publicizing the plight of the homeless to the people in their own communities.
Maybe the members of Congress should spend their time convincing their
colleagues to transfer some of the hundreds of billions of dollars in the
military budget to positive, socially oriented needs. LEMOS JACKSON Washington
