-- MERCURY, NEV. -- Actor Martin Sheen and astronomer Carl Sagan were among
438 antinuclear activists -- including the crew of a hot-air balloon --
arrested at the Nevada Test Site, where more than 1,000 activists gathered.
It was the largest demonstration in more than six years of protests at the
site and was held even though the first nuclear test of the year had been
detonated Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule.
The Soviet Union has said the test would end the Kremlin's 18-month
moratorium on testing.
Rep. Thomas J. Downey (D-N.Y.), who led a congressional delegation, told
the demonstrators, "Your voice is being heard in Washington. We are going to
end nuclear testing."
