LOS ANGELES -- LOS ANGELES -- Charities in 15 states are to receive more than $575,000 before Thanksgiving Day from Hands Across America, which sponsored a transcontinental linking of hands May 25 for the hungry and homeless.

Organizer Ken Kragen said Thursday that Hands Across America decided to move slowly in making the allocations after learning the event would bring in far less than the $50 million originally projected.

About $15.5 million of the $25 million total contribution has been netted for the poor, officials said. About $10,000 is coming in weekly, they said, projecting that $20 million will eventually be available for the hungry and homeless.

Articles appear as they were originally printed in The Washington Post and may not include subsequent corrections.
