NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC
Temporary Closures Regarding Lafayette Park

Portions of Lafayette Park will be closed to the public from November 13, 1996 to January 31, 1997. Closures are necessary for the construction and later dismantling of viewing stands and various components for the 1997 Presidential Inauguration which will be held on January 20, 1997.

Specifically, the southern section of Lafayette Park, which is the area marked on the map (on the back of this notice), will be closed from November 13, 1996 through January 31, 1997. Persons demonstrating or otherwise using the southern section of Lafayette Park, including the sidewalk, should remove themselves and any personal property by 9:00 a.m. on November 13.

As construction progresses to other areas of Lafayette Park, and the need arises, additional areas will also be closed for demonstration and public use.

Because the activities associated with the closures do not reasonably permit multiple occupancy, pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 7.96(g)(4)(iii)(A)(D), demonstration activities are not permitted on the various sections of Lafayette Park that are closed to the public. Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 7.96 (g)(4)(iii) (A), the National Park Service proposes an alternative site for demonstration activity. Specifically, those persons wishing to conduct demonstration activity may do so in the remaining sections of Lafayette Park, to the extent such sections are not closed, or in the northeast quadrant of the park. The northeast quadrant of Lafayette Park will remain open throughout the Presidential Inauguration construction period.

The National Park Service appreciates the public's cooperation in this matter.
