HIROSHIMA / NAGASAKI COMMEMORATION ITINERARY  April 2003

Dear sisters & Brothers,

This weekend a delegation from the Hiroshima Association for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (HANWA) will arrive in Washington, DC. The 20 person delegation includes 9 survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Hibakusha).

There are 3 public events scheduled:

1. Peace March to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Sunday April 28, 1:30PM, McPherson Square, 15th & I Sts.,     NW., to U.S. Department of Energy, 10th St.& Independence Ave., NW. Bring signs & Banners

2. Commemorate the Lessons of Hiroshima, Japan, Sunday, April 28th, 6:00 p.m. -- St. Stephens' and The Incarnation Church, 1525 Newton St., NW. Rev. Marjani Dele will coordinate a service of earth solidarity with the Japanese delegation, members of the Piscataway and Chappaquiddick Nations and the D.C. Community at large. Potluck dinner at 6 pm and Open Ceremony at 7 pm Worship in unity with the survivors (Hibakusha) of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. A 20 member delegation is visiting the United States to help mourn the victims of the bombing in New York. While in the District of Columbia, they will also visit Congress to lobby against the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

3. NUCLEAR WARS: PAST AND FUTURE? The United States used nuclear weapons in 1945. Is it preparing to do so again? Monday, April 29--7 pm, Kay Spiritual Chapel. American University, Mass & Nebraska Aves., NW. Atomic Bomb Survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Current Nuclear Experts Discuss: What Happened in 1945? And What Does Bush's New Nuclear Policy Portend? Speakers include: Keiko Murakami-- Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor; member, executive committee, Hiroshima Alliance for Nuclear Weapons Abolition; Mitsugi Moriguchi-- Nagasaki atomic bomb survivor; general secretary, Nagasaki Citizens for Nuclear Abolition; Nobuo Kazashi-- Professor, Hiroshima City University; author, The 21st Century of Philosophy: A First Step from Hiroshima; Julian Bond-- Chairman of the National Board, NAACP, Professor, American University; and University of Virginia Rear Admiral Eugene Carroll, Jr.\{Ret.)-- Former Director of military operations for all U.S. forces in Europe and the Middle East; Vice President, Center for Defense Information; Arjun Makhijani-- President, Institute for Energy and Environmental Research; Author, Target Japan: The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb and Nuclear Wastelands: A Global Guide to Nuclear Weapons Production and Its Health and Environmental Effects; Peter Kuznick-- Professor, American University; Director, American University Nuclear Studies Institute.
