Arnaud de Borchgrave to William Thomas

Email Exchange, May 30, 2003

Dear Thomas,

I wrote several columns prior to the war -- one goes back to the spring of 2002 -- questioning both WMDs in Iraq and Saddam's alleged alliance with Al Qaeda. Last year I also had a column titled "The Bush-Sharon Doctrine," which exposed how our foreign policy was under the control of Washington's Likudniks and the Christian Right. When I was in Jordan on my way to Baghdad in early April, the former Jordanian Prime Minister said that column should have been headed "The Sharon-Bush Doctrine."

When Rumsfeld and Bob Dole were in Iraq, I had already exposed Saddam, in a Newsweek interview, and his Gulf-wide ambitions. I had three interviews with Saddam between 1974 and 1978 when I was that magazine's Chief Foreign Correspondent.

Thanks for your interest.

Arnaud de Borchgrave

Dear Mr. de Borchgrave,

Thank you very much. You've done a lot to renew my faith in humanity.

To tell you the truth; I've long thought that you were only a hypocritical, jingoistic, really narrow minded shill.

But, Holy Crow, now you've done "Road map or road rage?" (WASHINGTON TIMES, May 28, 2003) - http://nl.newsbank.com/nojavascript.html

Congratulations, it's a great start on the road to sanity.

Wonder if you can continue your rehabilitation by questioning Iraqi WMDs. I mean, honestly, in 1983-84, when I was trashing the idea of supporting Saddam, and Reagan and Rumsfield were supporting him, where were you?

Oh, sure, now, or so we're told, the WMDs weren't really important, because the good old democracy loving USA liberated Iraq. Please, Mr. de Borchgrave, be true to yourself: how many hours of sleep did you lose over the plight of the poor Iraqi people? (None, right?) And where are all those jubilant Iraqis throwing kisses and rose petals at their liberating mercenaries? And how come, if the warhawks have liberated the downtrodden Iraqis, Viceroy Bremer won't let them govern themselves?

Thanks for thinking,

Thomas
