Closure of Lafayette Park for Jordan's King Abdullah

May 19, 1999

Jordon's King Abdullah arrived for a state visit on May 19, 1999. As had become routine, police closed a considerable portion on the western side of the Park.

On this occasion, however, a new tactic was employed for the first time. As the dinner hour drew nigh, Park Police and Secret Service began hanging yellow "crime scene" tape in the center of the Park, closing the additional areas south of the dark black lines on the east side.

These areas remained closed and guarded against the general public for approximately an hour, until King Abdullah's motorcade entered the northwest gate of the White House -- "X" on the lower left of the map. The broken lines indicate the sections which were closed prior to the additional closures.
