Man Arrested on White House Lawn

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A man jumped a fence onto the White House lawn Saturday evening and was taken into custody without incident, the Secret Service said.

Uniform Division officers immediately apprehended the man, who was not believed to be armed.

Authorities do not believe the incident had any connection with the U.S. bombings in Iraq or impeachment of President Clinton, said a Secret Service official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The unidentified man jumped onto the south grounds, the official said.

He said incidents of people leaping the White House fence happen a few times a year. ``Any intrusion into the White House grounds we take very seriously,'' he said.

The president and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton were at the White House at the time.
