WASHINGTON POST
June 24, 1994
Park Police yesterday moved billboard-sized protest signs from
outside the White House after arresting five protesters for in
Lafayette Park, a spokesman said.
Lt. James McLaughlin said the protesters, who had been in the
park for months, were arrested and charged with violating park
regulations·. He said tey had personal belongings and food with
them.
"The problem is that they're not allowed to sleep during the
demonstration.' McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin said that approximately a dozen signs were then taken
down because they were no longer under anyone's supervision.
New regulations restrict the size of signs on the White House
side of Pennsylvania Avenue. Protesters are also required to keep
moving. The rules are being protested in court.
Enforcement of camping regulations became controversial last
year when a group of protesters attempted to set up a campsite in
the park.
