Greetings, friends.
Here's a brief local action update. This afternoon a
coalition of Bay area peace, environmental, and social justice groups held a
protest rally at the headquarters of Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco.
Bechtel has a 5-year, $1.5 billion contract to manage the Nevada Test Site
for the U.S. Department of Energy. Participating groups included
Tri-Valley CAREs, Greenpeace, Peace Action, Livermore Conversion Project, Mt. Diablo Peace Center, and Western States Legal Foundation. About 70 people took part in a spirited, nonviolent rally where organization
representatives made speeches and read messages of support from NGOs in
France, Norway, and Japan. Lead by a giant puppet of President Clinton
bearing a sign that read, BILL 'BROKEN TEST BAN TREATY' CLINTON, the demonstrators marched around the block chanting, " Stop the testing, save
the test ban; Bechtel off Shoshone land." The Nevada Test Site is located on
land seized from the Western Shoshone Nation by the U.S. government in 1951, in violation of the Ruby Valley Treaty of 1863. (See statement of Ian
Zabarte, posted separately.) One TV station and one radio station were
present. Let's keep up the momentum! -- Jackie
