NO NUKES ASIA FORUM 1997 DECLARATION
(Fifth Conference) September 1-5, 1997
Quezon City, Philippines

OPPOSE COLONIZATION OF NUCLEAR INDUSTRIES!
STRENGTHEN OUR SOLIDARITY!
ADVANCE THE STRUGGLE FOR A NUCLEAR FREE ASIA!

1. THE DEVASTATION OF NUCLEAR INDUSTRIES TO THE PEOPLES OF ASIA

Despite the massive media projection of the "relative safety and necessity" of nuclear power plants (NPPs) for energy generation, the peoples of ASian countries have seen enough. But governments in the region are accelerating nuclear programs that aim to build, on a long-term basis, at least 47 nuclear reactors in addition to the 108 documented NPPs.

The massive nuclear plant disasters in the United Sates, Europe and Chernobyl will never be forgotten. Thus, efforts at phasing-out of problematic NPPs as energy source are with the gradual decommissioning in the U.S., the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Japan and other countries in Europe.

But this does not mean the specter of nuclear power will stop wielding its ugly head and endanger lives in the Asian energy markets. More transnational companies are entering nuclear technologies in Asian countries where democracy does not exist or where governments are corrupt.

Since nuclear reactor sales opportunities are diminishing, European, Japanese and American nuclear-exporting countries continue to expand their markets in Asia. Thus, attention must also be given to the nuclear-importing countries whose governments make the inflow of NPPs legally possible.

The harmful effects of NPP radiation and radioactive waste disposal has ravaged agriculture, human and animal health, polluted our air and waters and distorted the development paradigms of emergent Asian economies.

Now, more than ever, Asian people's should intensify efforts to block the entry of NPPs and pressure governments to reorient their options towards sustainable energy programs.

Asian people's representatives have convened to exchange information and experiences in struggling against nuclear power for both civilian and military purposes.

2. STRUGGLE FOR A NUCLEAR FREE ASIA!

The people of Asia have been waging a continuous struggle against the systematic nuclearization of our countries. To further our cause, we shall steadfastly endeavor to:
STOP THE EXPORT OF NUCLEAR WASTE AND INDUSTRIES! BLOCK THE IMPORT OF NUKES IN ASIAN COUNTRIES! EXPOSE THE DEVASTATING NATURE OF NUCLEAR POWER! ADVANCE HE ANTI-NUKE STRUGGLE TO GREATER HEIGHTS AND GREATER VICTORIES!

Approved by 60 delegates from Malaysia, India, Philippines, U.S., Netherlands, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Okinawa and Thailand.
